Crockpot
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8, ESV)
Years ago, a pastor friend of mine had an interesting saying that he passed on to me that I’ve adopted in my own life. He said there’s a lot of ways to think about things that happen or that need to use your brain power. Some things need immediate attention, some you can see coming soon, others you let simmer. The last one he said is a “crockpot” mentality. It means thinking about something but just letting it simmer continuously instead of dealing with it and then forgetting about it.
While there are times for us to use the Word of God in an immediate and visceral way, scripture is best consumed when you read it and then let it simmer in the crockpot all day. We call that meditation. When I say meditation, I don’t mean the image conjured in our minds with legs crossed, fingers put together and “ohm” chants. I just simply mean letting our minds think slowly and continually on God’s word during the day.
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:1–2, ESV)
